Chapter 13

Mario pops into my office as I am answering the last of my emails. There has been an outpouring of support as well as a lot of theories. Why people in the community have felt the need to write me about their theories instead of telling Officer Daniel and Officer Prince is beyond my comprehension, but I do acknowledge the spread of news in this town as many had discovered the part I’d played in Salem Mansfield’s murder investigation. And though I love this new chapter in my life, I miss the investigations and sleuthing I’d do weekly in Springfield. Maybe I can help again with Sherman’s case. Plus, it literally happened on the job.

“Hey, Rosi. I checked the cameras as you asked. They weren’t on, and I’m embarrassed to say the technology is a bit behind with the system.”

I take a slow, deep breath. “Please tell me that the cameras do not use VHS tapes.”

“Okay.”

“Okay, what?”

“I won’t tell you.”

I exhale my frustration. “I wish I could say I was surprised. I’ll let Officer Daniel know. And I’ll ask Tracy for an appropriation of money to update our security systems. What a mess.”

“Rosi, don’t be too hard on Tracy. She’s old school, but her heart for this community is in the right place.”

“I know. Thanks for all your help, Mario. Are you doing okay? This hasn’t been easy on any of us.”

“Celia made me a nice breakfast this morning.”

“Good to hear.” I wonder again why the women in Mom’s social circle dislike her so much. “Go home. It’s Sunday. None of us should be here. I’m taking off, too, and Tracy texted that she’s leaving in a half hour. We can regroup tomorrow.”

“I thought you wanted to put the dressing rooms back in order, return everything to the storage rooms?”

“Tomorrow. We can do that tomorrow. Plus, I’m not sure what I want to do with all of those rooms.”

Mario nods his head. “Tomorrow. Yes, that sounds nice. I’ll see you then.”

I watch Mario walk down the hallway. I don’t know if I have ever met a harder working man. I text my realtor and let her know that I’m ready to see some condos and townhouses. It will be a nice distraction. And it’s time to move out of my parents’ house.

I take Barley to the backyard while I wait for Keaton who will accompany me on my house-hunting adventure. She’s doubled in size. I throw a tennis ball across the yard as she chases it in a perpetual game of fetch. “You are a very slobbery beast,” I tell her.

“I hope you have nicer things to say to me,” says Keaton who opens the gate and lets himself into the backyard.

I laugh. “Well, I guess it depends on how much drool you’re producing today.”

“I think I’m drooling a bit seeing you in that sundress,” he says, pointing to my new sky-blue dress that lands just above my knees. I’m showing more cleavage than usual but nothing like Elena cleavage.
